Just what you need to know so you don’t waste a day of your vacation.
Yes, it’s pink. We call it Pantai Tangsi. But—and this is a big but—it’s not neon pink like a highlighter. I’ve had tourists complain that it looks “dirty” because they expected bubblegum colors. Look, it comes from crushed red coral dust mixing with white sand. That’s it. It’s nature, not a paint job. If you show up at noon when the sun is flat, it’s going to look dull. You want the vibrant pink? Get there early, or late in the afternoon. When the sand is wet, the color pops. That’s the pro tip.
Look, East Lombok is far. Like, way out there. If you’re staying in Kuta, you’re looking at 1.5 hours in the car. Senggigi? Forget about it, that’s 2.5 hours of pure traffic.
I see backpackers constantly trying to rent a scooter to save $20. Don’t do it. The road on the Ekas Peninsula is a nightmare. It’s unpaved, full of deep, back-breaking potholes, and it’s dusty as hell. By the time you get there, you’ll be covered in grit and your back will be shot. Seriously, skip the scooter.
What we do—and what any decent local guide does—is drive you to Tanjung Luar Harbor instead. You hop on a traditional wooden boat. It turns a bumpy, miserable, two-hour road ride into a chill 30-minute cruise past floating lobster farms. It’s just smarter.
You don’t just go to the beach for ten minutes. That’s pointless. If you’re out there, you make a day of it.
Most of the time, the captain takes you to Gili Petelu first. The snorkeling there is insane. No, really. It’s ridiculously clear. You jump off the boat and there are huge schools of fish everywhere. Way better than the main beaches.
After you’re done swimming, we hit the beaches. Note the plural. Pink Beach 1 is where everyone goes to buy instant noodles and coconuts. That’s fine. But tell your captain to go a bit further to Pink Beach 2 (Pantai Segui). It’s almost always empty. It feels like your own private island. If you’ve got time, there’s a massive cliff area called Tanjung Ringgit. Cool views, some old Japanese cannons from WWII hidden in the bushes—totally random, but hey, it’s cool.
I’ve seen enough tourists mess this up, so listen up:
• Bring cash. There are no ATMs in East Lombok. Nobody takes your card. Nobody cares about Apple Pay.
• Eat the local food. There are no fancy resorts here. You’re going to eat nasi goreng or pop noodles at a wooden shack and you’re going to like it because you’ll be hungry.
• Cover up. The sun on those wooden boats is brutal. If you don’t wear a hat and sunscreen, you’re getting fried. It’ll ruin your next three days of the trip.
