Most people I talk to who visit Lombok only care about Kuta. Or surfing down south. Some just want to hang out on the Gili islands. Look, the beaches here are great, I get it. But you are seriously missing the best part of the island if you do not go north. The north side is completely different. It is green, chilly, and feels like a massive jungle. If you want to get away from the sticky ocean heat for a day, you need to go to Senaru.
My name is Fahmi. I have been working as a local travel agent here in Lombok for over 10 years now. I have helped thousands of international travelers, couples, families, and backpackers set up their trips. I know this island inside out. I know what makes a tour group happy and I know what ruins a day trip. This is my honest guide for visiting Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. No marketing fluff, just real stuff from a local.
North Lombok is special because of Mount Rinjani. The volcano makes everything green. Down south it gets very dry and dusty, but up north it rains a lot. The soil is rich. When you drive up to Senaru, you are basically entering a huge rainforest filled with massive trees, wild monkeys, and cold mountain rivers.
The cool thing about a Sendang Gile trip is you get two waterfalls for one. They are on the exact same river path. You can easily do both in an afternoon. It is easily the best nature walk on the island. The trail connects the two spots but they feel totally different. Let me tell you what the walk actually feels like on your feet.
First you hit Sendang Gile waterfall. It is a massive two-tiered wall of water. Vines and moss grow all over the cliff around it. It looks like a movie scene. Getting to this first one is easy. You pay the entry fee at the gate and walk down a bunch of concrete stairs. It takes maybe ten or fifteen minutes. The path is clear, fenced, and safe.
If you travel with young kids or older parents, they will be totally fine. There are little wooden shelters at the bottom where you can sit and rest. You can just relax and feel the cold spray on your face. It is beautiful, but it is just the starting point. Don’t turn back here because the next part is where the real fun begins.
The real adventure starts when you head toward Tiu Kelep waterfall. This is the one everyone posts on social media. Honestly, pictures do not do it justice. It is a huge, loud curtain of water. One massive stream shoots out from the very top, and a million smaller streams weep out from the rocks underneath it.
The hike from the first waterfall to Tiu Kelep takes around forty five to sixty minutes. The concrete steps disappear completely here. You will walk on dirt paths, follow an old water canal, and eventually you have to cross a river.
The water usually comes up to your knees. The current can feel a bit strong against your legs and the volcanic rocks under the water are super slippery. You have to watch your step. But once you turn that final corner and see Tiu Kelep, you forget about the hike. You can swim right in the mountain pool at the bottom. The water is freezing cold and the wind from the waterfall feels like heavy rain, but it feels amazing after a long walk.
You cannot just wing this trip because Senaru is far away. You need to plan your time. Lombok is much bigger than people think. If you stay in Senggigi, the drive up north takes about two and a half hours each way. If your hotel is down in Kuta Lombok, it is a very long journey. Expect about three or three and a half hours of driving each way.
I always tell my clients to leave their hotel early. Try to arrive at the Senaru gate between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. The morning weather is usually much clearer, so you get to see Mount Rinjani during the drive. Plus you beat the afternoon heat and the big domestic tour crowds.
Do not wear flip flops for this. You need good walking shoes or sandals that strap onto your feet and have a good grip for wet stones. You will get soaked at Tiu Kelep from the mist alone, so bring a towel, dry clothes, insect repellent, a waterproof bag for your phone, and plenty of local cash. Keep in mind that things like entrance fees, local guide rules, and trail access can change depending on the weather. It is always smart to check the latest live updates with us before you start driving.
When you park your car, local guides will come up to you. If you only want to see Sendang Gile, you do not need a guide. The path is just stairs. You can do it alone easily.
But if you want to go all the way to Tiu Kelep, you should hire one. The river crossing can be tricky. The local guides know the riverbed perfectly. They know which rocks are safe, they will hold your hand through the fast water, and they carry your bags to keep your cameras dry. The guide system is run by the local village community, so your money goes straight to supporting local families. It is a good thing to do.
The mountain roads heading north are beautiful but steep. There are lots of sharp turns, random scooters, and sometimes cows standing in the road. There is no public transport out here. Some backpackers rent a scooter, but driving a bike for three hours straight on these roads is exhausting. By the time you finish hiking, you will be too tired to drive back safely.
That is why most people use a Lombok private driver service. It makes your day stress free. You get a comfortable air conditioned car to sleep in on the way back. A private day trip also gives you total freedom. You can stop whenever you want. If you see a cool beach viewpoint, you can stop for photos. If you want to feed the wild monkeys at Pusuk Pass, you can do it. If you want to grab lunch with a direct view of Mount Rinjani, you just tell your driver.
At Lombok Day Trip, we do not like rigid itineraries. Everyone travels differently. A young couple wants a fast adventure, while a family with kids needs to take things slow. We are a local business, so we just customize the day trip to fit your personal pace. We can easily pair the waterfalls with a visit to a traditional Sasak cultural village in Bayan so you can see the local way of life. We do whatever works best for you.
Lombok has so much untouched nature, but you need real local knowledge to navigate it without wasting time. Whether you want to see Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, book a private snorkeling trip to Gili Trawangan, Pink Beach, or Gili Nanggu, or just need a driver to explore Kuta Lombok, we can handle it.
